Hi everyone! So I'm extremely new to the Zone, but so far I'm a fan. What I'm wondering though is about working-out: I go to the gym 5-6 times a week and do cardio + some strength training. I'd rather not stop doing that, but I go so early in the morning that I only have had breakfast prior to....do I need to add a snack to that or what? Any other advice would eb greatly appreciated!

Hi Heather,

I have been on the Zone previously but I am completely new to the web-site forums and I am starting the program for a second time recently (3 weeks ago).

I have read the original Zone book (some things have changed since its publication). Anyways it is my understanding that you should eat a snack before you exercise to burn more fat not calories and to make your exercise more effective. The food you eat puts you into the Zone so when you are exercising your work-out is burning the right stuff (fat) and being productive. If you just had a meal (with in 30 min. of starting your exercise) your hormonal balance should be in the right place and you would NOT need another snack. After finishing your work-out at that time the book recommends having a Zone snack to keep you on track.

In the Zone book (hard cover- pages 55-64) there is an entire chapter dedicated to exercise in the Zone. I would recommend reading that and it will give you a full understanding.

Blessings,

Kristina

Just to add to what Kristina said, you could have a 2 block breakfast, and then eat the 3rd block for your post-workout snack. That way, you won't be using up one of your snacks so early in the morning.

My preference is to have a 1 block snack before my 5 am workout and then breakfast after the workout.

I don't like to fill up right before my workout so a snack is perfect.

Eating breakfast after helps me stay in the Zone until lunch very easily. If I don't eat a good meal after my work outs I tend to be hungry faster.

Hi Everyone,

I do the same a Matt. Early wakeup, 1 block snack (usually 1/2 Zone bar), exercise, then breakfast. I'm a 12 or 13 block a day zoner, so I eat a full 3 block breakfast after exercise.

To clarify a bit more, about the snack in relation to exercise, the purpose is to make sure your insulin level stays in the Zone while you exercise. When insulin is in the Zone you burn fat for all your energy needs. If you keep your insulin in the Zone during exercise, you keep burning fat to produce energy.

As Kristina mentioned, I also recommend reading the chapter on exercise in the book "The Zone". It's very informative.
